Why Thermal Imaging Matters on the Water

Unlike standard low-light cameras that amplify available light, thermal cameras detect heat signatures and work in complete darkness, through fog, smoke, and glare. On the water, that means detecting:

  • 9Hz — Nine frames per second. Smooth enough for most navigation use cases, including vessel detection, MOB (man overboard) search, and debris avoidance. 9Hz cameras are US export-compliant and the appropriate choice for the vast majority of recreational and commercial boaters.
  • 30Hz — Thirty frames per second. Noticeably smoother video, better for high-speed operation and dynamic target tracking. Required for certain commercial, law enforcement, and security applications. Subject to US export controls — check compliance if exporting or operating internationally.

Standard vs. Long Range (LR): When Does It Matter?

The LR (Long Range) models add a continuous optical zoom lens optimized for extended detection distances. If you regularly operate offshore, cross open water passages, or need to identify targets at distance before closing on them, the LR models are worth the premium.

For coastal, inshore, and nearshore boating where detection within a few hundred meters is sufficient, the standard M364C delivers excellent performance without the added complexity of zoom optics.
