Why Every Boat Needs a VHF Radio
A marine VHF (Very High Frequency) radio is one of the most important pieces of safety equipment on any boat. It's your primary link to the Coast Guard, marinas, bridges, and other vessels. Unlike a cell phone, VHF radio works when cell service doesn't — and it lets you broadcast a distress call to everyone in range simultaneously.

Fixed-Mount VHF Radios
A fixed-mount radio is permanently installed at the helm and wired into your boat's 12V electrical system. It's the preferred choice for most powerboats and sailboats for several reasons:
- More power: Fixed-mount radios transmit at 25 watts, giving you a range of 5–20+ miles depending on conditions. Handhelds are limited to 5–6 watts.

1. DSC (Digital Selective Calling)

When connected to a GPS source via NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000, pressing the distress button sends your vessel name, MMSI number, and exact GPS coordinates to the Coast Guard and nearby vessels automatically. You must register your MMSI number with the FCC (it's free) to use DSC.
2. NMEA Connectivity

Installation Tips
- Mount the radio at eye level at the helm, within easy reach of the helm seat
- Run the antenna cable with as few bends as possible — sharp bends degrade signal
- Use a dedicated 15A fused circuit from your fuse block
- Connect to your chartplotter's NMEA output to enable DSC with GPS position
- Program Channel 16 as your default watch channel (required by law in US waters)
