The ice is gone, the days are getting longer, and you're itching to get back on the water. Before you splash, though, a proper spring commissioning check will save you from headaches — and costly repairs — once you're out there. Work through this list and you'll launch with confidence.
Engine and Drivetrain
- Inspect all belts and hoses for cracks, wear, or soft spots
- Check engine oil level and condition — change if you didn't do it in fall
- Inspect the impeller on your raw water pump — replace annually if you're not sure when it was last done
- Check coolant level and condition
- Inspect the propeller for nicks, dings, or bent blades — even minor damage affects performance and fuel economy
- Check engine mounts for softness or deterioration
- For sterndrives: inspect bellows for cracks and lube the gimbal bearing
Fuel System
- Inspect fuel lines and connections for cracks, softness, or leaks
- Check the fuel filter and replace if needed
- Smell-test the bilge before starting the engine — any fuel odor means stop and investigate
- If the tank sat with untreated fuel, consider having it inspected or polished
Electrical System
- Reinstall and charge the battery — load test it if it's more than 3–4 years old
- Inspect all wiring for chafe, corrosion, or rodent damage (yes, really)
- Test all navigation lights, bilge pump, and blower
- Check the VHF radio, chartplotter, and other electronics for proper operation
- Test the bilge pump float switch by pouring water in the bilge
Safety Equipment
- Check PFD condition and re-arm any inflatable PFDs
- Inspect and re-arm the life raft if equipped
- Check flare expiration dates — replace any that have expired
- Inspect and test the fire extinguisher
- Verify the first aid kit is stocked and medications aren't expired
- Test the CO detector if your vessel has a cabin
Hull and Deck
- Inspect the hull for blistering, osmotic damage, or impact damage over winter
- Apply bottom paint if due (check manufacturer's recoat intervals)
- Inspect all through-hulls and seacocks — operate each one to ensure they move freely
- Check all deck hardware, hatches, and portlights for leaks
- Inspect the anchor, chain, and rode for wear and corrosion
Plumbing and Onboard Systems
- Flush and sanitize the freshwater system before use
- Test the head and holding tank system
- Check the bilge for water intrusion and confirm the pump is working
Before You Launch: The Dock Test
Before splashing, run the engine on muffs or a flushing attachment and check for water flow from the tell-tale, unusual noises, or smoke. Confirm all gauges read correctly. Once in the water, check immediately for any water intrusion around through-hulls, the stuffing box, or the stern drive. Give yourself 15 minutes at the dock before heading out.
A thorough commissioning takes a few hours but pays dividends all season long. Catch problems at the dock, not in the middle of the bay. Now go enjoy the water — you've earned it! ☀️🙂
