1. Chartplotters & GPS Navigation

What to Look For
- Screen size: 7" is a good starting point for smaller boats; 9"–12" for larger vessels or offshore use. Bigger screens are easier to read in bright sunlight.
- Sunlight readability: Look for displays rated 1,000 nits or higher for daylight visibility.
- Built-in vs. external GPS: Most modern chartplotters include an internal GPS antenna. External antennas improve accuracy in areas with obstructions.
- Chart compatibility: Major platforms include Navionics, C-MAP, and Garmin BlueChart. Check which charts are included and what additional coverage costs.

2. VHF Marine Radios

- Handheld VHF: Portable, waterproof, and great as a backup or for smaller vessels. Typically 5–6 watts with shorter range (5–7 miles).

- DSC (Digital Selective Calling): Allows you to send an automated distress signal with your GPS position at the push of a button. Requires MMSI registration (free via BoatUS or Sea Tow).
- GPS integration: Some fixed-mount radios connect to your chartplotter to automatically include your position in DSC distress calls.

3. Depth Finders & Fish Finders

4. AIS (Automatic Identification System)
AIS is a collision-avoidance system that broadcasts and receives vessel identity, position, speed, and heading data. It's standard on commercial vessels and increasingly common on recreational boats.
- AIS receivers: Display nearby vessel traffic on your chartplotter. Affordable and highly recommended for coastal and offshore boating.
- Class B AIS transponders: Both receive and transmit your vessel's data, making you visible to commercial ships and other AIS-equipped boats.
Buying tip: If you boat in busy shipping lanes or offshore, a Class B transponder is a worthwhile safety investment.
5. Marine Autopilots
An autopilot steers your vessel on a set heading or GPS route, freeing you to navigate, fish, or handle other tasks. Entry-level tiller pilots work well on smaller sailboats; hydraulic and mechanical autopilots are used on larger powerboats and sailboats.
For first-time boaters, autopilot is typically a later upgrade — but worth planning for when choosing a chartplotter with NMEA 2000 networking.
