Why Marine Safety Gear Matters
Before you cast off for the first time, having the right safety gear aboard isn't just smart — it's the law. The U.S. Coast Guard requires specific equipment on every recreational vessel, and the right gear can mean the difference between a close call and a tragedy. 1. Personal Flotation Devices (Life Jackets)
A USCG-approved life jacket is required for every person on board. Here's what to know when buying:
- Type I (Offshore Life Jackets): Best for open, rough water far from shore. Designed to turn an unconscious person face-up.
- Type II (Near-Shore Vests): Good for calm inland water where rescue is likely to be quick.
- Type III (Flotation Aids): The most popular for recreational boating — comfortable for all-day wear in calm water.
- Inflatable PFDs: Lightweight and comfortable, but require manual or automatic inflation. Not approved for non-swimmers or children under 16.
Buying tip: Always check the weight and chest size rating on the label. A life jacket that doesn't fit properly won't perform as designed.
2. EPIRBs & Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs)
If you're boating offshore or in remote areas, an EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) or PLB is one of the most important investments you can make.
- EPIRBs are vessel-mounted and transmit your GPS position to search-and-rescue satellites when activated — automatically or manually.

3. Visual Distress Signals (Flares)
USCG regulations require visual distress signals on all vessels operating on coastal waters, the Great Lakes, and territorial seas. Options include:
- Handheld flares: Affordable and effective for signaling nearby vessels or aircraft.
- Parachute flares: Shoot high into the air and burn for several seconds — visible for miles.
- Electronic flares (LED): Reusable and non-expiring, but check your local regulations as they may not satisfy all USCG requirements alone.
Buying tip: Pyrotechnic flares expire after 42 months. Check the expiration date on any kit you buy and replace on schedule.
4. Man Overboard (MOB) Devices
A man overboard situation is one of the most dangerous emergencies on the water. Modern MOB gear includes:
- Throwable ring buoys and horseshoe buoys — required on vessels 16 ft and over.
- MOB poles and drogues — mark the location of a person in the water.
