Why Getting Your Anchor Right Matters
An anchor is your boat's emergency brake, your overnight security system, and your ticket to swimming holes and lunch stops far from the marina. Get it right and you'll sleep soundly at anchor. Get it wrong and you'll spend the night watching your GPS track drift toward the rocks.
The good news: choosing the right anchor isn't complicated once you understand a few key variables — anchor type, size, and rode. This guide covers all three.
Step 1: Understand the Main Anchor Types
Different anchor designs excel in different bottom conditions. Here are the most common types you'll encounter:
Fluke Anchors (Danforth Style)
The classic lightweight anchor with two flat flukes that dig into the bottom. Excellent holding power in sand and mud relative to their weight. They fold flat for easy storage — ideal for smaller boats where space is limited.
- Best in: Sand, mud, clay
- Weakness: Can break out in rocky or grassy bottoms; can trip in reversing currents
- Best for: Bass boats, center consoles, day boats, and as a secondary anchor on larger vessels
Plow Anchors (CQR / Delta Style)
A hinged or fixed plow-shaped anchor that digs in and resets well when wind or current shifts. The Delta (fixed shank) is the most popular all-around anchor for cruising boats.
- Best in: Sand, mud, clay, some grass
- Weakness: Heavier and bulkier than fluke anchors; requires a bow roller for easy deployment
- Best for: Cruising sailboats, trawlers, larger powerboats
Claw Anchors (Bruce Style)
A three-claw design that sets quickly and holds well in a variety of bottoms. Doesn't fold, so it requires a bow roller or dedicated storage.
- Best in: Sand, mud, rock, coral
- Weakness: Lower holding power per pound than modern designs in ideal conditions
- Best for: Boats needing a versatile all-bottom anchor
New Generation Anchors (Rocna, Mantus, Spade)
Modern high-holding-power anchors with a roll bar or concave blade that sets quickly and holds exceptionally well. The current gold standard for cruising and liveaboard use.
- Best in: Sand, mud, clay, grass, some rock
- Weakness: More expensive; bulkier than fluke anchors
- Best for: Serious cruisers, overnight anchoring, anyone who anchors frequently
Grapnel Anchors
A four-pronged folding anchor that hooks onto rocks and hard bottoms. Not suitable as a primary anchor for most boats.
- Best in: Rock, coral, hard bottom
- Best for: Kayaks, dinghies, temporary stops in rocky areas
Step 2: Size Your Anchor Correctly
Anchor sizing is based on your boat's length and displacement. Manufacturers publish sizing charts — always follow the manufacturer's recommendation for your specific anchor model. As a general starting point for fluke-style anchors:

When in doubt, go one size up. A slightly heavier anchor is far better than a slightly light one. The cost difference is small; the peace of mind is significant.
Also consider your typical anchoring conditions: if you frequently anchor in exposed locations with strong winds or currents, size up from the chart.
Step 3: Choose Your Rode
The rode is the line (and sometimes chain) connecting your anchor to the boat. It's as important as the anchor itself.
All-Chain Rode
Heavy galvanized or stainless chain from anchor to windlass. The weight of the chain creates a catenary curve that improves holding and absorbs shock loads. The preferred choice for cruising boats with a windlass.
- Pros: Maximum chafe resistance, best holding, no UV degradation
- Cons: Heavy, expensive, requires a windlass on larger boats
- Best for: Cruising sailboats, trawlers, frequent overnight anchoring
Chain-and-Rope Combination
A length of chain at the anchor end (typically 15–30 feet) with nylon rope for the remainder. The chain provides chafe protection at the anchor and adds weight to improve the angle of pull; the nylon provides elasticity to absorb shock loads.
- Pros: Good performance, lighter than all-chain, more affordable
- Cons: Rope section subject to chafe on rocky bottoms
- Best for: Most recreational powerboats and day sailors
All-Rope Rode
Nylon rope only, sometimes with a short chain leader. Lightest and least expensive option.
- Pros: Lightweight, inexpensive, easy to handle
- Cons: Vulnerable to chafe, less holding power than chain combinations
- Best for: Small boats, occasional anchoring in benign conditions
Rode Sizing
Nylon rope diameter for anchor rode by boat length:

Step 4: Understand Scope
Scope is the ratio of rode length to water depth (measured from your bow chock to the bottom). More scope = better holding. The anchor holds best when the pull is nearly horizontal.
- Minimum scope: 5:1 (5 feet of rode for every 1 foot of depth) — acceptable in calm, protected conditions
- Standard scope: 7:1 — good for most overnight anchoring
- Heavy weather scope: 10:1 or more — use in strong winds or exposed anchorages
Example: Anchoring in 10 feet of water with a bow height of 4 feet = 14 feet of effective depth. At 7:1 scope, you need 98 feet of rode out. Round up to 100 feet.
Carry at least 150–200 feet of rode on most recreational boats. More is better.
Step 5: Anchoring Technique
- Select your spot: Check the chart for depth and bottom type. Look for swinging room — your boat will swing in a circle as wind and current shift.
- Approach into the wind or current (whichever is stronger), slow to a stop at your chosen spot.
- Lower the anchor — don't throw it. Lower it to the bottom while the boat drifts back slowly.
- Pay out rode as the boat drifts back, until you've reached your target scope.
- Set the anchor: Apply reverse throttle gently, then more firmly, to dig the anchor in. Watch a fixed reference point ashore — if it stays stationary, you're holding.
- Mark your position on your chartplotter and set an anchor drag alarm.
Pro Tips
- Always carry two anchors: A primary working anchor and a lighter secondary (lunch hook). The secondary is also your backup if the primary fails.
- Snubber line: If using all-chain, attach a nylon snubber line to the chain and cleat it off — the nylon absorbs shock loads that would otherwise jerk the boat and stress the windlass.
- Chafe protection: Where the rode passes through the bow chock, wrap it with chafe gear or a piece of hose — overnight chafe can saw through a rope rode.
- Rinse your anchor gear: After saltwater use, rinse anchor, chain, and windlass with fresh water to slow corrosion.
