A marine searchlight is one of those pieces of equipment you don't think about — until you desperately need it. Wattage and Light Output
Searchlight output is measured in watts (power draw) and candela or lumens (actual light output). Higher wattage generally means more light, but modern halogen and LED designs have changed the relationship between watts and output significantly.

Step-by-Step Installation
Step 1: Choose the Mounting Location
The searchlight should be mounted as high as practical on the boat — a hardtop, T-top, or bow rail gives the best elevation and widest field of view. Key considerations:
- The light must have a clear 360° rotation path — check for antennas, radar arches, and other obstructions
- Mount away from the compass (searchlight motors contain magnets that can cause compass deviation)
- Consider cable routing — you'll need to run power and control cables from the mount location to the helm
- Ensure the mounting surface can support the weight and vibration of the searchlight
Step 2: Mount the Searchlight Base
- Use the provided mounting template to mark hole locations
- Drill mounting holes and a cable entry hole for the wiring
- Apply marine sealant (3M 4200 or equivalent) to all holes before installing fasteners
- Secure the searchlight base with stainless steel bolts and backing plates — do not rely on screws alone in fiberglass
- Feed the power and control cables through the cable entry hole before sealing
Step 3: Run the Wiring
The searchlight requires two wiring runs:
- Power cable: From the fuse block or battery switch to the searchlight motor. Use marine-grade tinned wire sized for the searchlight's amperage draw (typically 10–15A for a 55W unit at 12V). Fuse within 7 inches of the power source.
- Control cable: From the searchlight motor to the helm controller. Use the cable specified by ACR for your controller — do not substitute generic wire, as the control signal requires the correct cable type.
Secure all wiring runs with cable ties every 18 inches and protect runs through bulkheads with grommets or conduit.
Step 4: Install the Helm Controller
- Choose a helm location within easy reach of the helm seat
- Cut the mounting hole per the controller's template
- Connect the control cable to the controller's terminals per the wiring diagram in the ACR manual
- Secure the controller in the panel
Step 5: Connect Power and Test
- Connect the power cable to your fuse block, with an appropriately rated fuse
- Power on and test full rotation — confirm the searchlight rotates 360° smoothly in both directions
- Test vertical tilt through its full range
- Verify the light illuminates and the bulb is properly seated
- Check all cable runs for chafe points and secure any loose sections
