How to Install a Bilge Pump: Automatic vs. Manual and Proper Wiring

Why Every Boat Needs a Properly Installed Bilge Pump

Water gets into boats. It comes in through prop shaft seals, stuffing boxes, hatch seams, and fittings — and in an emergency, through hull damage. A bilge pump is your first line of defense against accumulating water, and in a serious situation, it can be the difference between staying afloat and sinking.

A bilge pump that isn't properly sized, correctly wired, or reliably automatic is nearly as dangerous as no bilge pump at all — because it creates a false sense of security. This guide covers how to choose, size, and install a bilge pump correctly.

Automatic vs. Manual Bilge Pumps

Automatic Bilge Pumps

An automatic bilge pump activates on its own when water reaches a set level, using a float switch or electronic water sensor. This is the standard for any boat that is left unattended — at a slip, on a mooring, or on a trailer in the rain.

Automatic pumps are wired to a dedicated, always-on circuit (not switched through the main panel) so they operate even when the boat's main power is off. This is a critical safety requirement — a bilge pump that only works when the ignition is on provides no protection when the boat is unattended.

Manual Bilge Pumps

A manual bilge pump is controlled by a switch at the helm. The operator activates it when needed. Manual pumps are typically used as a secondary pump or as a way to run the bilge pump without the float switch (useful for testing or pumping out after a rain).

Most installations use a three-position switch: Off / Auto / Manual On. In Auto, the float switch controls the pump. In Manual On, the pump runs regardless of the float switch. This gives you full control while maintaining automatic protection.

Float Switches vs. Electronic Sensors

  • Float switch: A mechanical switch that activates when a float rises with the water level. Simple, reliable, and inexpensive. Can stick in the "on" position if debris accumulates around the float — inspect and clean regularly.
  • Electronic water sensor: Detects water conductivity with no moving parts. More reliable in debris-filled bilges; less prone to false activations. Slightly more expensive.

Sizing Your Bilge Pump

Bilge pump capacity is rated in gallons per hour (GPH) — but the rated GPH is measured at zero head (no vertical lift). Real-world output is always lower because the pump must push water up through the discharge hose to the through-hull fitting. A pump rated at 1,500 GPH may deliver only 800–1,000 GPH in a typical installation.

When in doubt, size up. A larger pump costs only slightly more but provides significantly more protection. Many experienced boaters install two pumps — a smaller automatic pump for routine bilge maintenance and a larger high-capacity pump for emergencies.

  • Bilge pump (sized for your boat)
  • Float switch or electronic water sensor (if not included with pump)
  • Three-position bilge pump switch (Off/Auto/Manual)
  • Marine-grade tinned wire (typically 14 or 12 AWG for most pumps)
  • Inline fuse holder and fuse
  • Marine-grade heat shrink butt connectors and ring terminals
  • Discharge hose (bilge pump hose, sized to pump outlet)
  • Hose clamps (stainless steel, two per fitting)
  • Through-hull fitting and seacock (for new installations)
  • Zip ties and adhesive cable mounts
  • Drill and bits

Step 1: Choose the Pump Location

The pump must be installed at the lowest point of the bilge — where water naturally collects. Key requirements:

  • The pump inlet must be submerged when water is present but the pump body should not be permanently submerged (most submersible pumps can run submerged, but check your model)
  • The pump must be accessible for inspection and replacement
  • There must be enough clearance for the float switch to rise and fall freely without obstruction
  • Keep the pump away from fuel tanks and fuel lines

Step 2: Mount the Pump

  1. Most bilge pumps mount with stainless steel screws through the pump's base flange. Use a backing plate on thin fiberglass to prevent the screws from pulling through.
  2. Orient the pump so the outlet port faces toward the discharge hose run
  3. If the bilge floor is uneven, use a pump mounting bracket to level the pump
  4. Do not mount the pump directly against a fuel tank or in a location where it cannot be reached for service

Step 3: Install the Float Switch

If your pump doesn't have an integrated float switch:

  1. Mount the float switch near the pump, at a height that activates the pump before water reaches critical components (engine, electrical panels, etc.)
  2. Ensure the float has full freedom of movement — it must be able to rise and fall without hitting the hull, pump, or other obstructions
  3. Mount the float switch body securely — a loose float switch can give false readings

Step 4: Run the Discharge Hose

  1. Connect bilge pump hose to the pump outlet and route it to the discharge through-hull fitting, which should be above the waterline on the hull side
  2. The hose must loop up above the waterline before going to the through-hull — this "high loop" or vented loop prevents water from siphoning back into the bilge when the pump is off
  3. Secure the hose with stainless steel hose clamps at every fitting — two clamps per connection
  4. Support the hose run with hose clamps or zip ties every 18 inches to prevent sagging
  5. The through-hull fitting should have a seacock that can be closed if needed

Step 5: Wire the Pump and Float Switch

This is the most critical part of the installation. Follow ABYC E-11 wiring standards.

Wiring for Automatic Operation (Recommended)

The pump needs two power paths: one through the float switch (for automatic operation) and one direct (for manual operation). A three-position switch at the helm manages both.

Basic wiring diagram:

  • Battery positive → Fuse (within 7" of battery) → Switch terminal "Manual"
  • Battery positive → Fuse → Float switch → Switch terminal "Auto"
  • Switch common terminal → Pump positive wire
  • Pump negative wire → Negative bus bar → Battery negative

In the Auto position, the float switch controls the pump. In Manual On, the pump runs regardless of the float switch. In Off, the pump cannot run (use sparingly — leaving the pump in Off when unattended removes your automatic protection).

Check your pump's spec sheet for current draw. Size the fuse to protect the wire, not the pump — use the smallest fuse that won't nuisance-trip under normal pump operation.

Key Wiring Rules

  • The automatic circuit must be wired to a non-switched, always-on circuit — not through the main panel switch. The pump must work when the boat is unattended with the main panel off.
  • Use marine-grade tinned copper wire throughout — not automotive wire
  • All connections in the bilge must use waterproof, heat-shrink sealed connectors — standard butt connectors will corrode quickly in the bilge environment
  • Fuse the positive wire within 7 inches of the battery or power source

Step 6: Install the Helm Switch

  1. Choose a location on the helm panel that's easily visible and accessible
  2. Cut the switch hole per the switch template
  3. Connect the switch wiring per the diagram above
  4. Label the switch clearly: "BILGE PUMP"

Step 7: Test the System

  1. Pour water into the bilge until the float switch activates — confirm the pump starts automatically
  2. Confirm water is discharged through the through-hull fitting
  3. Test the Manual On position at the helm switch
  4. Confirm the pump stops when the float switch drops (water level drops below the switch activation point)
  5. Check all hose connections for leaks while the pump is running
  6. Verify the high loop in the discharge hose is above the waterline

Maintenance Schedule

  • Monthly: Pour a small amount of water in the bilge to confirm the automatic float switch activates the pump
  • Seasonally: Inspect the float switch for debris and freedom of movement; clean if needed
  • Annually: Inspect all hose connections and clamps; check the through-hull fitting and seacock for corrosion and smooth operation
  • Every 3–5 years: Replace the pump impeller or the entire pump — bilge pumps are wear items and should be replaced proactively, not reactively

Pro Tips

  • Install a bilge pump alarm: A high-water alarm that sounds at the helm if water rises above the pump's capacity gives you early warning of a serious ingress problem
  • Two pumps are better than one: A small automatic pump (500–1,100 GPH) for routine use and a large emergency pump (2,000+ GPH) wired to a separate circuit provides redundancy
  • Keep the bilge clean: Oil, fuel, and debris in the bilge can clog the pump intake and foul the float switch. A clean bilge is a reliable bilge.
  • Never discharge oily bilge water overboard: US federal law (33 CFR Part 151) prohibits discharging bilge water with a visible oil sheen. Use bilge absorbent pads and an oil-water separator if your bilge accumulates oil.
